Abaddon’s eyes met mine, and I turned to head down the dark street toward a quieter spot, a less public place. I wasn’t sure what Abaddon had in mind, but I knew it wasn’t going to be pleasant. I didn’t want anyone to accidentally find us or to valiantly step in, trying to be a hero.
As I headed farther away from the commotion of Bourbon Street, into the darkness, I didn’t need to turn to make sure they were following me.
I could feel them.
As we got farther from safety, my radar grew more and more intense, as if it was sensing their anticipation of what was to come.
I approached a dark alleyway and figured this would be as good a place as any to do it. Only the hazy illumination of a streetlight reached here, and no doors or windows could be seen, just the back sides of two buildings.
An efficient place to die.
It was here and now. I turned to face Abaddon, startled to find him leaning down, merely an inch away.

Top 10 Guest Post

Magdalene's Top 10 Questions…

1. Favorite movie/actor/actress?
I've never had time to notice. Would much rather be sneaking out to hunt Fallen Ones.

2. Favorite song/singer?
Anything that gets my heart pumping or fills me with the exhilaration that I feel when I look at Eran.

3. Favorite food?
Muffuletta sandwich, hands down. It is my go-to lunch. There's something about that salty goodness that I can't resist! Like Eran's lips after a good workout!

4. One item you cannot live without?
My sword. It's a trusty companion when I come across an enemy salivating to take my life or the life of another.

5. Who would you like to meet (dead or alive)?
I can meet just about anyone dead or alive, given my unique ability. However, one entity does remain elusive…the one who created creation, the one who started it all, the one who produced life its self. That one…I have a lot of questions for.

6. Favorite hobby?
Sending our enemies to eternal death, comes to mind, but that's more of a way of life. So I'd have to say…riding my awesome Harley Davidson Sportster, especially into the school parking lot while the faculty are arriving in the morning.

7. Guilty pleasure?
Eran. He's been off limits to me for a long time so you can probably guess why he was the first one to come to mind.

8. Favorite author and book?
The ones who put together the Book of Dossiers on the Fallen Ones. Those individuals are brave, the kind of brave that humbles you. When you think about how close one has to get to an enemy who wants you dead, close enough to know they regularly reek of onions, it leaves an impression in the back of your mind.

9. Do you collect anything?
Rapiers and to a lesser extent fashionable leather fighting attire. With each fall to earth, I seek out both, in the order mentioned. The rapier is self-explanatory. The leather suit, well, there's nothing like kicking some butt in intimidating foreign fashion.

10. Favorite color?
Black, green, brown…Anything that provides camouflage against a background where I'm hiding in wait for my enemies return.

Title: Crimson & Cream
Author: C.M. Skiera
Series: The Oxbow Kingdom Trilogy (#1)
Genre: Epic Fantasy (YA/Swords & Sorcery/Coming-of-Age)
Publisher: Self Published
Release Date: July 1 2014 (Second Edition)
Edition/Formats Available In: eBook (Digital)

Hounded by watchmen, trolls, goblins, and a relentless bounty hunter, thirteen-year-old Jetsam dreams of the day he’ll no longer have to run for his life.  A victim of circumstance burdened with an interminable unlucky streak, each sunrise ushers in more difficulty for the resilient adolescent.  An avalanche of life-changing events forces him to boldly decide his future.
In the mountain city of Dwim-Halloe, Eidryn and Elvar were born twins to teachers at the city’s revered School of Sorcery. When the new king outlawed magic, the boys’ parents were murdered. Their deaths forfeited the siblings' magical birthright and made them homeless fugitives.
Rescued by an orphan gang, the water-logged twins were nicknamed Flotsam and Jetsam. To survive as outcasts, the orphans scavenge and pilfer nightly. Their last risky foray sent them fleeing into an unfamiliar cavern. Now the brothers are lost deep underground where they encounter a strange beast that will change their lives forever and begin a harrowing journey for their ultimate survival.
Crimson & Cream recounts Jetsam’s adventurous tale of flight and discovery as the fugitive orphan unravels the tangled mysteries his tortured past while securing his tenuous future.

C.M. Skiera grew up in Michigan and now lives in California with his wife and two rescue Chihuahuas. He works as a professional environmental engineer to pay the bills and has been writing since the mid 1990s. Crimson & Cream is his debut epic fantasy novel. He started writing Crimson & Cream in 1999, and after lots of twists and turns, 13 drafts, plenty of rejections, the arrival of the 21st Century and the advent of online self-publishing, the ebook is finally here. C.M. Skiera is currently finalizing Mirrors & Mist, book two of The Oxbow Kingdom Trilogy. An avid reader, C.M. Skiera enjoys a compelling story, regardless of genre, though speculative fiction novels are some of his favorites.

“Jetsam!” his twin brother Flotsam whispered.  “Get down!  We shouldn’t be here.”  Jetsam’s ragged pant leg tightened from his brother’s pull.  The second-hand breeches were ill-fitting for the growing youth.  Jetsam’s trousers, and his wrinkled tunic, were swiped from a peasant’s clothesline.  With a grunt, Jetsam jerked his leg free of his brother’s grasp.
Jetsam hung from the stone wall, transfixed on a maiden strolling in the garden below him.  With the tip of his nose resting on the ashlar, his aching fingers clung to the bulwark’s lip.  Jetsam’s nostrils flared at the fragrances rising in the warm night air.  The toes of his shoddy boots wedged into the cracks between the blocks.
Upon first glimpse, Jetsam noticed the girl’s eyes.  Her crystalline orbs drew him in, mesmerizing Jetsam.  Sallow moonlight danced in her locks, shimmering like waves.  Willowy and angelic, the somber lass displayed a regal air.  She meandered the flagstone path amidst flowers and shrubs, drifting like a leaf on the wind.  Surrounded by low hedges, she moved out of earshot.
“Jet-sssam,” Flotsam hissed again.  “Stick to the alleys.  This is too dangerous!” he whispered.  “Can’t believe you sodding talked me into this.”
Jetsam snorted.  Only had to pester you about it every day for weeks, he thought.  If only you’d relax, then we could enjoy our birthday!  Jetsam was amazed he convinced his brother to go this far.  For months he envisioned this special adventure for their special day, but convincing his cautious twin was another hurdle.  Swimming the moat was hazard enough, but creeping inside the castle through a narrow drainage chute was risky indeed.  Must be the full moon, he rationalized.
“Sheer lunacy, sneaking into the Citadel—birthday or not,” the pragmatic Flotsam warned, whispering his brother’s thoughts while maintaining his sense of reason.  “Turn back while we can.”
Despite the plea, Jetsam didn’t budge.  Logic fell on deaf ears.  Captivated by the lass, Jetsam ignored his twin’s urging.
“Seem rather fond of that wall,” Flotsam teased.  “Find a soft spot?”
“Always the jester,” Jetsam replied with a smirk.  “Come have a look,” he whispered.
Visibly flustered, Flotsam scaled the rough surface alongside his brother.  Inside the yard, trees rustled in the midnight breeze while their branches shaded flowers and bushes from the lunar radiance.
“Let’s go inside!” goaded Jetsam, blue eyes flashing with enthusiasm.  He glanced at Flotsam’s stern face.  Bet he’s hungry, Jetsam connived.  “Look at those apples!” Jetsam exclaimed in a high whisper.  “Can you imagine eating one?  Fresh and juicy—not some chewed-up core.  Fill our sacks and not a one’ll be missed.”  The trick to getting his brother over the wall was to convince him of the garden’s bounty.  A meeting with the mysterious girl would be Jetsam’s secret birthday present.
“You’re not looking at apples,” Flotsam retorted, “and she’ll holler for the stinkin’ guard.  We’ve done just fine filchin’ in town.  Always enough for both of us, and then some.”

Keegan's Chronicle Series

Coexist (Keegan's Chronicles #1)

Sixteen-year-old Keegan is struggling to keep her huge secret from her friends--she's an elf, descended from a long line of elves that live in secrecy alongside humans.

In elfin society, mates are predetermined but not allowed to meet until they are eighteen. Against tradition, Keegan's brother Thaddeus told her Rourk's name because his visions warned him she'd need Rourk's protection, especially since Keegan will play a key role in the coming war between the dark and light elves.

Rourk finds himself drawn to Keegan's side every time she thinks his name. He wants to talk to her but remains in the shadows, silently guarding her every time she mentally beckons him. A twist of fate thrusts the two of them together when Rourk is forced to step up his protection and make his presence known.

An ancient prophecy deeply entwines Keegan's family and the future of their society. Somehow they must find a way to thwart fate and win the battle...without losing Keegan. With war brewing, and dark forces aligning, will Keegan and Rourk ever have the life together that they both desire?

Conflicted (Keegan's Chronicles #2)

In the Elfin world, magic and destiny determine who will be together. "Chosen" pairs are fated to meet at the age of 18. Keegan, however, is an anomaly. Having fallen in the battle between the Light and the Dark, she is only alive now due to Black Magic, and her bond with her Chosen is broken. She cannot remember Rourk at all. For the first time, she feels like a normal teenager. She is dating Donald, her long-time crush, and everything seems perfect. But Rourk still feels their bond, and despairs for the woman he was always meant to love. Keegan’s best friend Anna is determined to find a way to use her powers to return Keegan’s bond, no matter what it takes. The question is does Keegan even want it?

Consumed (Keegan's Chronicles #3)

Keegan has dealt with a lot over the last two years: Death, black magic and the loss of her bond to her chosen mate. But on her eighteenth birthday, the bond with Rourk returns.

Rourk longs to be by her side. Though he knows the distance between them causes Keegan physical pain, he wants to give her the time she needs.

Now, Keegan faces her hardest decision. Tradition requires elves marry at eighteen. If she accepts the path laid out for her, she will be spared a lifetime of physical and emotional pain. But will that life ever really be her own

Standalone Books

In The Mind of Thaddeus (Short Story)

Thaddeus is the only elf that stands between his kind and complete extinction.

That’s a lot of responsibility for a twelve year old. He’d rather play video games with his best friend and make fun of his older sister Keegan than have constant visions about the fate of elf-kind.

Unfortunately, his visions are happening more and more as the time of the prophesied battle approaches, and it’s making it hard for him to live a normal life. At the urging of his father, leader of the Light Elves, Thaddeus begins a journal as part of his training; even though he thinks it’s lame.

Through his witty and wise eyes, we glimpse the world of Julia Crane’s “Coexist”, a novel about the battle between good and evil and the triumph of love.

In the Mind of Thaddeus can be read as a stand alone story or as a supplement to “Coexist”. It is a 7,500 word short story.

Lauren

A girl with a second chance. A boy with a terrible secret. When the truth is revealed, Lauren's world comes crashing down.

For once, seventeen year old lauren's life is going right. She's attending the college of her dreams, has what appears to be the perfect boyfriend, and is surrounded by her childhood friends.

But her boyfriend, Tristan, grows more possessive by the day, and his temper is getting harder to keep in check. When lauren realizes Tristan is using her for her power, she has to make a choice: Tristan or her world.

Anna

Follow Anna from Keegan's Chronicles on her own adventure!

Seventeen-year-old Anna is an unskilled, natural witch still seeking a way to access her magick. When she moves to Seattle for college, she encounters two powerful witches who need her as much as she needs them. For the first time, Anna believes she's found someone who can help her explore her own magick.

Julia Crane is the author of the Keegan’s Chronicles, IFICS. She has a bachelors degree in criminal justice. Julia has believed in magical creatures since the day her grandmother first told her an Irish tale. Growing up her mother greatly encouraged reading and using your imagination.

My Review

Cait Weerd is visiting her grandmother at the Manchester Central Library. They are returning some books to the archives deep below the library when they are attacked by an evil creature, an 'undain'. Cait's grandmother gives her a valuable book and tells her to run. Then the whole scene changes and we are with witches and dragon riders. The witches are attacked, again by an evil creature, and an ancient grimoire is stolen. Why are these books so important? Where are these 'undain' coming from? Why do they want Cait?

This book is FULL of action! Which normally, I wouldn't really be into that but I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Simon grabs you in the beginning and doesn't let you go! Although, I have to say I was a little confused in the early part if the book because of the scene change, but once I got acclimated to it, I was on a wild ride all the way to the finish line. There is a nice twist at the end of the book that had me really going. The author really put some work behind this. He brings you into his world and practically shows you what he sees through is descriptiveness of your surroundings. I think he did a wonderful job and this book would be recommended for anyone who likes magic and dragons. 4 out of 5 stars.
